The Story Behind the Slideshow Below...

Yesterday Davis and Brady had a baseball game in BC, so Kim and I decided to carpool together (blessing #1). We got there a little early so the boys went off to practice their pitching in those pitching cage thingys and Kim and I got settled on the bleachers. It only seemed like two minutes later I noticed the coach walking our way with his arm around Davis. The first thing I saw was a bloody nose and my first thought was "are you kidding - we just got here?" and then I saw his face. My stomach just dropped and I felt pretty whoozy. I turned over my shoulder to Kim and asked if she could handle things like that and if she could help me and she said, "yes" (blessing #2). (We were told that the coach's son picked up a baseball in those pitching cage thingys and hit the ball back to Davis and it hit him line drive in the face.) I asked Kim as they were walking over if we needed to take him to the hospital and she said, "yes." Then I asked her if she would come with me and she said, "yes." She was so awesome!! She went to Davis, put her arm around him talking to him calmly and helped hold ice to his face and got in the backseat with him (blessing #3) on the way to the hospital.

When we got to the hospital, Kim took Davis into the ER while I parked the car and she started getting him checked in. We didn't have to wait at all (blessing #4). Most of the nurses thought Kim was Davis's Mom because she was so lovingly awesome with him! They would ask questions looking at her and the pale lady on the chair (me) would answer. They took us back to a room and Mick showed up soon after (blessing #5). So, Kim was able to leave and she offered to take Bennett back to her house while we were in the hospital (blessing #6). And Mick's parents just happened to only be 5 minutes away from our house - they were coming to watch the baseball games. So, they were able to stay with Kyle and Jake and take them to their game (blessing #7).

The nurse gave Davis something for the pain (blessing #8) and after awhile they took him to get a CT. They told us it would only take 20-30 minutes for results...but it took a little longer. Davis was sure to tell the doctor too. It was pretty funny. He asked the doctor, "Do you have my picture yet?" The doctor said, "Not yet." Then Davis said, "You said it would only take 20-30 minutes and it's been 52 minutes." I think the doctor didn't know what to say, he just smiled and said hopefully it'll be here soon. And two minutes later he had the results. He said Davis has a fractured nose and that it will heal on it's own (blessing #9). After hearing the doctor and nurse saying that he may need surgery - it was a huge relief!! Looking at his face, you'd think that he broke a lot more.

Davis was amazingly tough through the whole thing (blessing #10)!!! It still amazes me how well he took everything. He was so brave! He said he didn't even know we were taking him to the hospital. I don't think he knew the real extent of his injuries -- until he finally looked in the mirror hours after the accident. He's getting used to his face now, but is starting to get a little self conscious when others look at him. I told him he won't be going to school until he can at least open his eye again. But then I remembered WASL - so we'll see what the school thinks. I'm not sure all kids could handle seeing him this way - I still have a tough time (and I'm still emotional when I think about it - which is too often). I don't think the pictures do his injuries justice. So, today we're taking it easy and he's keeping ice on his face. Hopefully we'll see BOTH of his beautiful brown eyes soon. And despite everything - we were blessed in a lot of ways yesterday.

Thanks Kim for everything! You're my HERO!!

I couldn't wait to check back today to see how Davis was doing. What a scarry experience for everone. As a mom I know it's completley traumatic to take your child to the ER for an injury, I've done it many times.
Well done Kim, you were the voice of calmness that was needed in this situation. Hope he's OK Jodi.

Ewww, that is aweful, I had been clicking on your name and kept seeing that stinken golf ball and was wondering when you would do a new one, but not that one!!! My kids are all very worried for him! Poor Davis and poor you, you didn't even get to get nachos and a pop yet! :) Tell him we hope he gets better soon!

I'm so glad I was there and was able to help. I can't say I would have been so calm if this were my own son, but I really enjoyed being able to be there for Davis. You were great, too, calling all the right people and taking care of those details and driving! You still had your wits about you although I knew you were completely traumatized. I was impressed with your calmness, too! I'll never ever forget this experience! It's been engrained in my memory forever!! I'm so glad I was there.

How is he looking today? Has the swelling started to go down at all yet? My kids are so concerned for him, especially Brady and Cameron. They are constantly asking about him. We'll have to come over and see you guys and check up on Davis. Hang in there!! He's going to get a little better every single day.

What a traumatic day! Davis's face does look bad, but I think most kids would be impressed and think it was "awesome, dude".
Jodi, your post was well written, and informative. I couldn't wait to read "the rest of the story".

Davis' swelling has gone down just a little today. He can open his eye just a teeny bit - just enough to see that his eye is all bloody inside. I don't know if that's going to be any better to look at... And his whole left side is turning into one HUGE bruise. Thanks for all your concern!!

Kim, I think you are so awesome. You are my hero too. I would've asked the same thing of a friend if it was my own kid. I remember when you had that accident with Brady last summer and you were cool and collected with that too! You are a saint!

Jodi, you wrote this very well. I felt like I experienced the whole thing. I hope that Davis recovers quickly and I'm so glad that it wasn't more serious. Good for you for seeing the positive with this whole situation. I'm so glad you guys were so blessed, and I'm so glad that Kim was there to help!

Jodi, that is so awful. I love the picture of him smiling. What an awesome kid for handling this so well.

And I think you are so wonderful for looking for the positive and finding the blessings from this accident.

Great job Kim! I don't know if I could have been so calm. It sounds like you were definitely in the right place at the right time.

Only children can still give a beautiful smile through pain and events like that! What a trooper!
