Tuesday, Davis and I drove to Spokane to meet with the ear surgeon. First, the surgeon and I discussed Davis' history with hearing loss - the age I first noticed his hearing loss, what doctors have suggested or done for him, if I have family with hearing loss, etc. And after looking over his hearing tests and looking in his ear, the surgeon thinks Davis was probably born with his hearing loss.
He said Davis has conductive hearing loss, where sound is not being transmitted into his inner ear. The surgeon thinks Davis has a disorder(s) of the small bones in the inner ear. There are three small bones interposed between the ear drum and the small hole across which sound is transmitted into the inner ear. When these bones are fused or broken there is a conductive hearing loss. And that's what the surgeon thinks is going on. He doesn't think Davis' hearing loss is due to scar tissue.
The surgeon told us that with this kind of hearing loss, hearing aids will definately work well and that there is also good surgical treatment. He said they would put Davis asleep for the surgery, but when they perform this surgery on adults, they keep them awake.
Then we discussed the social issues some older children have with wearing hearing aids, the risks of surgery, the statistics, etc. He also told me that 1 in 7 children with Davis' hearing loss that DON'T do something for it will fail a grade - which I found very interesting and scary.
So, after hearing everything the surgeon had to say, Davis said he wanted to try surgery. Mick and I feel that if we have a chance of FIXING his hearing with surgery and not have to deal with trying to make Davis wear a hearing aid - we want to try surgery too. So, we tentatively scheduled him for surgery on Thursday, March 5th. In the meantime, I will continue researching everything I can.

Wow. Thanks for the update. It is amazing what they can do with surgery, and I hope it works for Davis!
Ohh, I hope it goes good and that it does the trick. Keep us posted!
After your discussion w/ the surgeon did you feel relieved? No more nerves due to the battling local docs? I think you & Mick are approaching this well. Very logical, especially if Davis is willing to try surgery. At least this way the three of you know you've exhausted all options rather than just slapping a hearing aide on & always wondering "what if"...March 5th-I'm putting it on my calendar right now! You'll all be in our prayers. Let me know if you need anything. =) BIGGEST BLOGS HUGS EVER!!!
Wow...what a blessing that this could be fixed by surgery. I hope it works and that Davis's recovery will be speedy.
Jodi, I am so happy to hear that there seems to be a solution for Davis. What a brave boy to decide that he would be ok with the surgery! I guess he didn't like the alternative :)
Hi Jodi, We are close to Spokane, so if you need a place to stay, or a meal while you are here or just a friend, please call. I mean it. 509-559-5282
The surgery sounds like a good option for Davis. I hope everything goes well!!
Good to hear an update on your trip to Spokane. I hope the surgery option is the one that works, it would be nice to just "fix" it. I hope all goes well.
Sounds like a logical step to take! I think you're doing the best thing for him. I'm sure everything will go great, especially since Davis is willing! I know my kids will keep Davis in their prayers as soon as I tell them he's having surgery.
Keep me posted Spodie...I want to know how everything goes!
I hope everything goes well with the surgery. It sounds like a very good option. Good luck and keep us updated.
P.s. If Mick really does miss having daughters, tell him in about 5 years when they are all deep into puberty and emotional breakdowns, that he can switch us for some boys.
Good luck. It will be great for him the hear like everyone else.
I hope the surgery goes well. How are you doing? Sometimes I think things like this are harder on moms than anyone else. You are an amazing person!!!
Wow. It sounds like this surgery is really promising! I hope it all goes well. I can't believe you're going private! You have to invite me, and you have to set it up so that Google Reader still notifies me if you update, or else I'll say right now that I'll forget to check your blog. :)
